S. Central Smoldering Fire |
|
|
|
On January 28th, 2010 the Lutcher VFD was dispatched to a smoldering fire on S. Central Ave. On arrival a smoldering fire underneath a metal ramp was found. Engine 1 and 5 members were present and soaked the area and extinguished the smoldering fire. The fire was caused by earlier torch cutting work done on the ramp which had ignited the brush in underneath and parts of the wooden construction of the ramp, the fire was initially extinguished by the occupant, but the radiant heat from the metal ramp caused the area to begin to smolder which resulted in dispatching the fire department. |

EXTREME COLD WEATHER SAFETY TIPS
- As all of us are keenly aware, the state of Louisiana is bracing for very uncommon extremely cold temperatures this week.
- All residents and citizens should prepare themselves, their families and their homes for the arctic winter blast heading to Louisiana.
- The high cost of home heating fuels and utilities have caused many citizens to search for alternate sources of home heating. The use of wood burning stoves is growing and space heaters are selling rapidly, or coming out of storage. Fireplaces are burning wood and man-made logs. All these methods of heating may be acceptable. They are however, a major contributing factor in residential fires. Many of these fires can be prevented.
- In the event of winter storm damage that knocks out electrical power, have a plan and course of action to ensure the safety of your family and all occupants of your home. Avoid makeshift heating, which can be dangerous – even life-threatening.
- Operating a kitchen oven with the door propped open is extremely hazardous, especially with a gas appliance. If the flame goes out, gas continues to flow, creating a danger of carbon monoxide poisoning
The following fire safety tips can help you stay safe and maintain a fire safe home during this winter blast:

Heating Safety |
|
|
During the cold weather season, the Lutcher VFD reminds you to be safe about your home heating!
Each year fire claims the lives of 3,500 Americans, injures 20,000, and causes billions of dollars worth of damage. People living in rural areas are more than twice as likely to die in a fire than those living in mid-sized cities or suburban areas. The misuse of wood stoves, portable space heaters and kerosene heaters are especially common risks in rural areas.
The United States Fire Administration (USFA) believes rural fire problems can be reduced by teaching people to recognize the hazards. By following some of the outlined precautionary steps, individuals can greatly reduce their chances of becoming a fire casualty.
